After Ivory Coast lost two of their three group-stage games, including a 4-0 setback to Equatorial Guinea, the French coach was fired. Although it was uncertain whether the host country would advance to the knockout stage at the time of Gasset's dismissal, the Elephants did manage to sneak in as one of the top third-place teams.
Subsequently, in the quarterfinals, Emerse Faé, the temporary coach, oversaw a thrilling victory over Mali and a penalty-shootout victory over the reigning champion Senegal.
The Elephants will now play DR Congo, who won their first match of the competition in the quarterfinals, defeating Guinea 3-1. Before overcoming Egypt on penalties in the round of 16, the Leopards drew all three of their group stage games.
Midweek sees the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semifinals, where hosts Ivory Coast will try to carry on their wild streak against DR Congo.
After losing their last group match 4-0 but still making it into the knockout stages, the Elephants fired their manager. Then, under interim coach Emerse Fae, they defeated Senegal in a nail-biting penalty shootout.
However, that was insignificant in comparison to the thrilling victory over Mali in the quarterfinals, which was secured by an equalizer from Simon Adringra in the ninetieth minute, followed by a winner from Oumar Diakite in stoppage time during extra time.
In their attempt to win an AFCON on home soil, they now have to contend with a DR Congo team that has gone unnoticed.
After drawing their first three group games, the Leopards eliminated Egypt on penalties, and in the last round, they comfortably defeated Guinea to win a match in 90 minutes.
